December to April: clear skies, calm seas, perfect poolside mornings

Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, and that single geographic fact changes everything about when you should visit. While Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman coast get hammered by monsoon rains from May to October, Samui runs on its own weather calendar. The island's peak rainy season falls between October and December, and even then, storms are usually short, sharp, and over by lunchtime.

Here is a straightforward, month-by-month breakdown of what to actually expect on the ground, from someone who lives here year-round.

Dry Season: December through April

This is the classic window, and for good reason. Skies are blue, humidity is manageable, and the sea is calm enough for snorkeling off Chaweng Noi beach without a second thought.

December marks the transition out of the rainy season. The first two weeks can still see occasional showers, but by mid-month the weather locks into dry mode. It is also high season for tourism, so expect higher accommodation rates and busier beaches. Christmas and New Year bookings fill early, especially for private villas.

January & February are the best months on the island, full stop. Rainfall drops to around 40-60mm for the entire month. Temperatures hover between 26-31°C. The water is crystal clear. If you want to visit Ang Thong Marine Park, this is when boat trips run most reliably. Crowds are present but not overwhelming. Guests staying at Villa 369 during these months often spend entire days moving between the infinity pool and the beach below.

March & April bring the hottest weather of the year. Expect daytime highs of 33-34°C. The Songkran Festival in mid-April is Thailand's famous water festival and worth experiencing at least once. Accommodation prices start softening after mid-March, which makes late March and early April a smart time to book if you want great weather with slightly fewer people.

Shoulder Season: May, June, September & November

May & June are underrated. Rain increases, but most days still see more sunshine than clouds. Showers tend to arrive in the late afternoon, last an hour, and leave the evening cool and fresh. Villa rates drop significantly, and you can often negotiate better deals on longer stays. The diving at Sail Rock is excellent during this period.

September is the driest month of the inter-monsoon period. Many seasoned Samui visitors specifically target September for the combination of low prices, thin crowds, and decent weather. The island feels like it did 15 years ago — quieter, more local, less rush.

November is the tail end of the monsoon, and it is the wettest month statistically. However, "wet" on Samui rarely means days of unbroken grey. It means dramatic storms, vivid green hillsides, and waterfalls at full power. If you are flexible and do not mind the occasional rainy day, November offers the lowest prices of the year.

Monsoon Season: July & August

Here is the part most travel blogs get wrong. July and August on Koh Samui are not monsoon months in the way Phuket experiences them. Samui is on the Gulf side of the Thai peninsula. While the Andaman coast is in full monsoon mode, Koh Samui gets moderate rainfall, warm temperatures, and perfectly swimmable seas.

July averages about 90mm of rain — less than London gets in the same month. Days are mostly sunny with occasional cloud build-ups in the afternoon. It is peak European holiday season, so visitor numbers tick up despite it being technically "off-peak" on weather charts.

August is similar. Slightly more rain than July, but most of it falls in short bursts. Ocean visibility is good enough for snorkeling. This is arguably the best value month for visitors who want warm weather without the premium pricing. A week in a private villa like Villa 369 costs considerably less than the same week in January.

October: The Wild Card

October is the one month where Samui's weather genuinely becomes unpredictable. This is when the Gulf monsoon kicks in properly. Rainfall can hit 250-300mm for the month, and there can be consecutive grey days. Seas get rougher, and some boat trips to Ang Thong or Koh Phangan are cancelled. That said, there are also years where October is perfectly pleasant. It is a gamble.

If your dates are locked to October, you can still have a wonderful trip. Just plan indoor activities as backup — cooking classes, spa days, temple visits — and you will be fine. Most rain comes in multi-hour bursts rather than all-day drizzle.

Practical Tips for Planning Your Visit

Flights: Bangkok Airways operates multiple daily flights from Bangkok (BKK and DMK) to Samui's compact USM airport. Direct international flights are limited, so most visitors connect through Bangkok or Singapore. Book flights early for December-February travel.

What to pack: Lightweight, breathable clothing year-round. A light rain jacket for monsoon months. Reef-safe sunscreen is essential. Samui is casual — you will not need formal attire anywhere except possibly one or two high-end restaurants.

Accommodation: Private villas offer significantly more space and value than hotels, especially for families or groups. A four-bedroom villa split between two couples often works out cheaper per person than two hotel rooms, with the added bonus of a private pool and kitchen. Villa 369 in Chaweng Noi is a strong example — sea views, infinity pool, and full concierge service that can arrange everything from airport transfers to private boat charters.

The bottom line: January through March is the safest bet for perfect weather. But if you are flexible on dates, May-June and August-September offer outstanding value with weather that is far better than most people assume. The "worst" time to visit Samui is still better than the best week of weather in most of northern Europe.
